“My Arms Are Weak” – Karen Byk Almendra

L. told me that many years ago and now I cannot lift the cardboard moving boxes. I do the same thing with you: I’m six years old again and I trust a man who explains that I’m a sweet girl. My girlfriends love each other. They kiss and they hug in decadent places and we don’t care that the roof is dripping or that people are throwing up all around us.   L., for example, assured me that she knows me for real, that I don’t need to seduce her. I believe her because all men want to save me when I have nightmares but none of them think that my poems are good. It’s different with L., I call her when I leave your place, she cries on my shoulder while I kiss her through her hair.   We know each other for real, so much that we can...

The DubTalk ft. Lizzy and the Palm

Elisabeth Mulroy is the final guest on this season of The DubTalk. When on stage, she goes by the name Lizzy and The Palm, because she does not feel she is alone in her artistic creation. Like many of us caught up in the creative process, Lizzy often feels the presence of a force which endows her with the ability to create music with a genuine passion. She has playfully named this force The Palm, but as she so wonderfully says in our conversation, she hesitates to confine this presence to one word because that excludes it from being everything else, which it also is. Throughout this episode of The DubTalk, we talk to Lizzy about the first time she became acquainted with this force and how she has learned to appreciate it and include it in her life and music. She has come a long way from the city in...

The DubTalk ft. Julieta Degese

NEW SEASON. NEW NAME. NEW SOUND BABY. Starting with this season, we’ll be calling the podcast The Dub Talk! We’re changing the name to avoid confusion with us as an entity. Although we had our humble beginnings in the podcast format, Berlin Untelevised will become so much more in the future, and The DubTalk is just one aspect the empire. Business adjourned. Welcome to the second season! Julieta Degese is our featured guest to open the season. She’s a comedian from Argentina who has found herself at home in the Berlin English comedy scene. Yeah. Read that one again. In this episode, Julieta explains how a girl from Beunos Aires finds herself doing comedy in Germany, why she prefers English for comedy, and how she has experienced the comedy scene. This last point piqued our interest, and we delved into the topic of sexism and discrimination. We clashed when it...

The DubTalk ft. Babiche Papaya

The penultimate episode of the final season features yet another multi-talented and socially active being, and she goes by the name of Babiche Papaya. At her request, we opened up the episode with a lengthy freestyle cypher session. Right away, we noticed how unique and witty her freestyle swagger is. She was whipping out lines that were totally off the wall and unexpected, which had us doubled over with laughter. Once we’d rapped ourselves into a frenzy, we finally introduced ourselves to each other and got to talking about serious shit. We wanted to understand how she perceived the Berlin hip hop scene as a woman and an immigrant from Rwanda. Although she speaks fluent German and has such an incredible flow, she was often discouraged by male MC’s treating her as an outsider and questioning her skill even when it was on clear display before them. Throughout the episode,...
